Description: Sadly, it is estimated that more than 4,000 children will be removed from their homes in the coming year due to unspeakable abuse or neglect. We wish their stories always had a happy ending, but that is often not the case. The reality is that foster care is its own kind of devastation wrought with unstable living conditions and ineffective support systems. While the system is made up of many dedicated professionals, it is also overwhelmed. Social workers carry up to 25 cases at once, attorneys represent over 150 children, and judges have a burden of up to 500 cases. Resources are too limited to give every child the attention they deserve. It’s not hard to understand how a foster child’s medical issues can go unnoticed or unaddressed.
But Voices for Children (VFC) is changing this paradigm with our Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). CASAs are matched with a single child or sibling group, become experts in their cases, and provide Court advocacy to ensure they have access to much-needed medical care.

VFC is unique within the foster care community as the only agency authorized by the Superior Court to provide CASA services. However, we routinely collaborate with judges, attorneys, social workers, counselors, psychologists, and other nonprofit organizations and interact daily with the County’s Health and Human Services Agency, foster care facilities/shelters, and foster child services of all kinds to ensure the best outcomes for our children. We know that the system alone cannot offer foster children hope for a happy, healthy future, so we work with our community partners to change the way foster care works.
