Mission Statement: SDOP develops civic leadership through organizing to improve community and shape public policy. We work on behalf of the public good by activating ordinary people to participate in democratic life. We teach and train people to successfully address issues affecting their lives by allowing them a unique opportunity to engage all levels of government.

Advancing Health and Wellness: SDOP is building the capacity of underserved communities to impact the behavior of government and health providers by:

  • Training communities on the benefits of the Affordable Care Act (SDOP has moved hundreds of people into the Low Income Health Program),
  • Powerfully engaging safety-net patients to make the delivery system more responsive to the needs of consumers,
  • Building new partnerships with county government and providers that aim to trial new innovative practices, such as hot-spotting and community engagement, into the public health system,
  • Building long-term constituencies of advocates for a more efficient and responsive public health system.
