Mission Statement: To improve community health and wellness, access to care for all, and support for physicians through engaged volunteerism.
Advancing Health and Wellness: About one in four adults in San Diego County is at a high risk for poor health because they do not have health insurance. The vast majority are employed but do not have access to health insurance through their employment. Others are family members working hard to raise their children, and the cost of insurance is too great of a burden on their family budget.
Even with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in early 2014 and increased numbers of people eligible for health insurance, there will still be too many adults in our community uninsured or with limited access to care and preventative services.
It is the working poor families that are most often uninsured or with limited access to care. This gap is where the services of the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation are most needed.
Description: Our flagship program, Project Access San Diego (PASD), recruits, supports, and sustains a network of physician volunteers to provide pro bono specialty care and surgeries to low-income, uninsured San Diego County adults. Patients are primarily Hispanic (94%) and female (70%), and 90% live below the federal poverty level, but all are ineligible for Medi-Cal or Covered California. San Diego has no county-run hospital. Uninsured adults access primary care at nonprofit clinics; however, federal regulations prevent clinics from providing them specialty care. PASD improves patients’ health, and returns them to employment, caring for their families, and self-sufficiency. PASD maintains an average of 48 days from patient intake to appointment, compared to the average 120 days for Medi-Cal patients, a credit to our signature intensive patient care management. Additionally, we provide prevention programs, two county-wide public health initiatives, and support to San Diego physicians.
