AHF Welcomes New Team Members

We are pleased to welcome Melanie Mijares and Anthony Nguyen to our AHF team. Melanie and Anthony both bring experience in working with nonprofits and community as well as their personal lived experience that has helped guide and inform their career journeys.  We look forward to their contributions to AHF’s mission and our community engagement.

Melanie Mijares
Program Associate

Melanie has joined the team as our new Program Associate. She brings 13 years of nonprofit community engagement experience working with diverse, historically underserved and marginalized communities, connecting them to valuable resources like identity affirming services, college readiness programs, food and public health programs. Most recently, she served as the Volunteer and Outreach Manager for Reality Changers, where she was tasked with recruiting, training, onboarding and supporting all Reality Changers volunteers. Previously she served as San Diego Pride’s Bilingual Community Outreach Coordinator, and prior to that she was MANA de San Diego’s Hermanitas Program Coordinator, where she advocated for youth-led initiatives which resulted in the Youth Advisory Council and a Youth Representative in the organization’s Board of Directors.

Anthony Tan Nguyen, MA, MHA
Administrative Manager

Anthony Nguyen joins us from Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine, the research arm of Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego, where he served as the Alliance Coordinator.  Prior to this role, he was the District Director/Office Manager for U.S. Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) and has worked in both the congressman’s San Diego, CA and Washington, DC offices working in and around issues of health care, seniors, housing, labor, human trafficking, national security, and Asia-Pacific affairs. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from San Diego State University, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of San Diego, and a Master of Health Administration from the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy. Anthony previously worked for the U.S. Social Security Administration and started his public service career interning for the U.S. Department of State – Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator.

Anthony’s family immigrated to San Diego when he was two years old. He is a proud 1.5 generation Vietnamese American, born in Taiwan, and fluent in Vietnamese. He enjoys oil painting, throwing ceramics, and spending time with his wife and two young sons at national and state/local parks. Anthony enjoys behind-the-scenes coordination, operations and logistics, and he also brings a wealth of knowledge about the San Diego social services ecosystem and public policy arena.
