Mission Statement: Fighting Hunger – bringing Health and Hope to the Imperial Valley.
The mission of the Imperial Valley Food Bank is to ensure that all residents have access to nutritionally valuable food. Our programs support the distribution of food as well as increase self-reliance to improve the quality of life within our community.
Advancing Health and Wellness: Thousands of low-income people in Imperial County suffer not only from chronic hunger, but also form alarming rates of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, stroke, obesity, and macular degeneration. This stems from unhealthy diets and little or no access to healthy food. We distribute fresh, canned, boxed, and frozen food through 66 partner agencies as well as food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.
Because such hunger infrastructure in remote, rural parts of Imperial County is comparatively weak or nonexistent, the IVFB operates a Mobile Food Pantry program (MFP) several times monthly, distributing that same fresh, healthy, nutritious food to our isolated, needy families who reside in underserved, rural areas. The Imperial Valley Food Bank also has full-time staff that teaches nutrition education classes throughout the county.
Description: Since 1991, the Imperial Valley Food Bank has offered food to local families in need. From our humble beginning in a garage to our warehouses and trucks in El Centro today, we’ve steadily increased our capacity to meet the needs of our community. Since 2005, demand for emergency food assistance in the Imperial Valley has quadrupled, leveling off at over 20,000 residents served per month for the past four years. The food insecurity rate in the Imperial Valley is almost 28%, and our childhood food insecurity rate is almost 44%. We are dedicated to our mission, “Fighting Hunger – bringing Health and Hope to the Imperial Valley,” which we work toward through several mutually reinforcing programs.
We are the authorized distributor of the USDA TEFAP program, a Partner Distribution Organization of Feeding America, and a member of the California Association of Food Banks.
