i2 Innovation Initiative Funding Challenge: Top 25

This will be an exciting event where we’ll hear Quick Pitches from our region’s most innovative social enterprises.
With i2, Alliance seeks the most promising innovation to transform the current health paradigm (high cost and poor outcomes) and improve quality, increase capacity, and reduce costs.

This year’s i2 journey began with over 100 applicants. On May 9th, the Top 25 will Quick Pitch before a live audience comprised of funders and experienced judges where we will select 5 finalists for the last qualifying round leading up to the winner being selected this Summer.

Andy Ballester
Co-founder, GoFundMe

Andy Ballester co-founded GoFundMe, the world’s largest personal fundraising platform. As the CTO of GoFundMe, Andy oversaw all tech development and systems for a platform that transacted billions of dollars per year. Andy is a member of GoFundMeBoard of Directors. He is now working on homelessness solutions, tech startup infrastructure, and climate change solutions here in San Diego. Andy volunteers his time on the EvoNexus, San Diego Grantmaker’s Funders Together to End Homelessness and San Diego Impact Investors Network, and mentors tech startups in San Diego.

Connie Matsui
Interim Chief Executive Officer/Past Board Chair, The San Diego Foundation;
Board Chair, Halozyme Therapeutics Inc. and Artelo Biosciences

Connie Matsui’s career encompasses three different industries during periods of rapid growth and evolution: commercial banking, biotechnology and social innovation. During her 32-year corporate career, she held various general management positions at Biogen Idec, IDEC Pharmaceuticals and Wells Fargo Bank. In addition to chairing the Board of Governors of The San Diego Foundation, she now chairs the Board of Directors for Halozyme Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: HALO).

Connie has been a lifelong volunteer and nonprofit board member at the local, national and international level. She has been an agent for strategic change and a champion for catalytic philanthropy and impact investing in her roles on foundation and regional grant maker boards including: Biogen Idec Foundation, Rancho Santa Fe Foundation, MiraCosta College Foundation, San Diego Foundation, World Foundation of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and San Diego Grantmakers.

Thomas Kluz
Senior Investment Manager
Qualcomm Ventures

Thomas is the head of health care investing at Qualcomm Ventures where he focuses on digital health care companies. Thomas is also a General Partner at dRx Capital, which is a joint venture investment company launched by Novartis and Qualcomm with a capital commitment up to $100M. As part of these roles, Thomas strives to catalyze the success of digital medicine products, services and business models by investing in high-growth, technology companies.

Prior to Qualcomm Ventures, Thomas was an investment professional at Providence Ventures, the venture capital arm at one of the nation’s leading healthcare delivery networks, Providence St. Joseph Health. Prior to Providence Ventures, Thomas was part of the strategic finance / strategic investing team at Cambia Health Solutions, the private equity sponsor for Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, a nationally recognized health insurer committed to transforming healthcare.

Debbie McKeon
President & CEO
San Diego Grantmakers

Prior to joining San Diego Grantmakers, Debbie was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Council of Michigan Foundations. Debbie has extensive experience in designing and supporting cross-sector collaborative impact models, especially utilizing network and systems change practices, and building public-private partnerships. She is nationally recognized for her expertise and innovative approaches in philanthropy, nonprofit capacity building, and business development, and is a frequent speaker at national convenings to share her learnings. Former positions include executive director of NorthSky Nonprofit Network (MI) and managing director & CEO of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, both of which she was a founder. Recent state level board positions include the Michigan Association of United Ways and Michigan Humanities Council.

Greg Anglea

Interfaith Community Services

Greg’s career has been devoted to helping others. Greg started his career at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at the University of San Diego. He then joined Interfaith Community Services as the Volunteer Coordinator and Faith Liaison, and went on to serve as the Director of Development for five years. Later, he moved to California State University San Marcos as the Director of Major Gifts, building community support for a regional guaranteed-admission program that provides a path to college for low-income, under-served youth. Finally, Greg returned to Interfaith as its CEO. Greg is currently the Board President of the Alliance for Regional Solutions; Board Member of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless; Co-chair of the North County Live Well Leadership Team, and Immediate Past President of the North County Philanthropy Council.



Ricardo Dos Santos
ResMed Strategy & Ventures
i2 Journey Guide

Ricardo dos Santos is an Entrepreneur in Residence in ResMed’s Strategy and Ventures arm. At ResMed, he manages the company’s novel ventures incubator, combining elements of internal and external entrepreneurship and venture capital. He is focused on creating purpose-driven, digital health ventures and partnerships at the world’s most connected med-tech company, innovating like and with startups. Previously, Ricardo was the Chief Business Officer for Biological Dynamics, an oncology diagnostics startup, where he led the company from inception to its commercial stage while successfully securing multiple rounds of funding. Before BioDyn, Ricardo helped set the standard for successful corporate entrepreneurship at Qualcomm. While there, he created an internal innovation competition and corporate accelerator that turned out dozens of successful projects and leaders.

Elizabeth Dreicer

Elizabeth is a humanitarian, environmentalist, conservationist, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. Her life is devoted to seeing, sharing, and developing solutions to creating a better world, including reforming systems. Elizabeth’s career includes leading data, advanced analytics, financial services, healthcare technology services, community health and managed health companies. She is devoted to advancing solutions to modern challenges in—medicine, cyber, financial and environmental domains. Elizabeth is also Co-founder and Investor in a number of software, analytics, data, film and impact investment companies.
